San Francisco’s doom rock quartet ORCHID thunders their own brand of heavy fuzz like the second coming of Black Sabbath dropped through a wormhole from another dimension where the 70s are alive and well. They have an EP entitled “Through the Devil’s Doorway” under their belt and have just finished mastering their much-anticipated first full length album. This Thursday they are playing Thee Parkside in San Francisco with other local faves Anvil Chorus and My Victim. Don’t miss it!

They’re not new, but they’re new to me! I stumbled across LA’s Karma to Burn when checking out The Sword’s MySpace. Both will be in San Francisco at the beginning of October and I plan to be there!

K2B brings a little extra something to the high desert rock formula, I can’t put my finger on it but it’s like a relentless confidence that is more in your ear and less in your face. They’re currently touring Europe as their alter ego Year Long Disaster, which brings a more modern sound while still kicking major ass.

I’ve been on a bit of a Stoner / sludge / doom metal kick lately, and the face-melting fuzz of Sweden’s DoomDogs fills the bill nicely. In the vein of White Witch Canyon, they sound like a cross between Motorhead and Black Sabbath. Grab them on vinyl or CD. Digipak CD folds out to an upside-down cross a la Danzig. Doomtastic!

Fans of Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson and Powerman 5000 will love this week’s pick, the gas-mask-sporting crew of Underlined! This Florida band’s multi-layered blend of metal and industrial is heavy as hell while at the same time unexpectedly melodic. My understanding is that Underlined began as a solo project by leader H7 and grew into a full-fledged band, now on the verge of releasing their debut full-length album “Deadtime Stories”. A demo release entitled Truth and Denial is available through iTunes. 100% brilliant.

Simply put, Billy Connally is one of the Bay Area’s great unknown rock guitar heroes. Over 27+ years of guitar playing experience in numerous bands shines through on his just-released solo album entitled “The Silent Canvas”. Fans of Joe Satriani will not only be impressed but blown away by the pure understated musicianship and emotion in the Billy’s heavy melodic guitar compositions. He’s currently booking dates with supporting band The Billy Connally Project — they opened for Pat Travers earlier this month — so catch this classic in the making if you can!

His thirteen song collection of guitar driven instrumentals entitled “The Silent Canvas” is now available for sale on Amazon and iTunes, and selected songs are streaming on his MySpace.

New Song and News!

Finally got together a full finished demo of new song “No Right”! Check it below and on our Audio page! The arrangement is very close to final, though some of the vocals will probably be rerecorded. I’m very happy with the production value on this one, it’s got a killer sound!

This rocker will be one of the songs on our “Summer’s End” EP due out late summer / early fall. The lineup so far:

I have one more new song in the works I just wrote called “The Beast” that I’ll be working on shortly. It will be a heavy, grinding fuzz / stoner rock song like “She” and “Grinning Skulls”. This is in addition to the 10+ other songs in progress, so we’ll see what else makes it into the EP. Stay tuned!

How To Destroy Angels is the latest project from Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, featuring his lovely new wife Mariqueen Maandig on vocals. Self-produced and self-distributed, they are technically an indie band, but — not surprisingly — easily come across as slick and well-packaged as any major label release. At turns haunting, sticky-smooth, grating, and disturbing, HDA is highly recommended listening for fans of NIN.
